Ahem. Technically, it's called an "avatar" but you can call it your picture or your icon or whatever you damn well please, really. If you would like to set up one an avatar for your forum account, and get it to show up under your name when you post, listen up:
- Make sure you are logged in. Obviously... but you'd be surprised.
- Click "Your Options" in the forum header. Find the title "Salt Lake Motorsports Forum". Directly below that is a bar with options (including the log in button you just used). Next to FAQ is "Your Options."
- Choose "Edit Profile".
- Find the field "Avatar URL". This is where you will enter the URL (basically, the web address of the image you will be using for your avatar). Some notes: Notice that this is a web address you'll be entering. This means that the image must already be online, or you will have to find a way of getting it online. There are lots of free image hosts out there. One I like that is quick and easy is ImageShack. If you use ImageShack, make sure you copy the last URL they offer you, the direct link to the image. The other options won't work. I'll go into making your own image below, but for the rest of this, I'll assume you have your image URL and you're ready to rock. If not, see below.
- Paste the URL in the Avatar URL field.
- Scroll down the page and click "OK." You may want to change other settings at this time, as well. That's up to you.
- Bam. You're done. As long as that URL is right and the image is online, it should show up now.
But... it looks kind of... funny.
Ah, yes. You'll want your image to be 128px by 128px, square. If it is bigger, it gets scaled down. If it isn't square, it gets stretched. This is a fault of the forum software we're using, but we're working on a fix in house to make it easier. In the meantime, make your avatar square.
Okay... how do I do that?
Well, you can find a square image online that is roughly 128px by 128px (a little over or under shouldn't hurt too much) using Google Images (and save it & re-upload it with imageshack, to be polite to whomever is hosting that image). Or, you can make your own!
Now, Superman has super software, so I have Adobe Photoshop at my disposal, but you may not be so lucky (or it may just be over kill). Really, any graphics program that can save to JPG, GIF or PNG will work. Even MS Paint! Just resize to 128px by 128px and save as one of the aforementioned formats, upload to some sort of webhost (your own hosting, your myspace account, or a place like ImageShack) and, of course, follow the steps above, and you're good to go.
Edit: Here are some online avatar makers. No graphic software needed.
