In 1994 Yamaha announced the creation of Star Motorcycles, a new standalone brand name for its cruiser series of motorcycles in the American market. Although a separate brand, Star motorcycles will continue to be sold at Yamaha dealerships. In other markets the same bikes will still be sold as Yamahas. In 2006 The brand was expanded to being its own company, although Yamaha still handles production and distribution. The brand is operated out of the Yamaha America offices in Cypress California; the motorcycles are designed in the United States.

The 1,854cc (113.1 cubic inches) four-stroke air-cooled V-twin engine was purpose built to deliver maximum torque at 2,500 rpm in the 55 to 75 mph range. Set at 48 degrees, the cylinders have a four pushrod valves, twin spark plug cylinder heads.

With a 100mm bore and a stroke of 118 mm, the engine has a compression ratio of 9.5:1 and is the first Yamaha cruiser motorcycle to be equipped with the compact Exhaust Ultimate Power Valve (EXUP) 4-stroke power valve system previously only found on their range of high performance sports motorcycles.

An unusual feature of the new engine is a special 'pent roof' combustion chamber, designed to increase the efficiency of gas flow. The engine also has special balancers on both sides to reduce the vibration typical of large V-Twins.
